We are a Family

Vicki Hepler, 2017 ICF Michigan President

What is a family?  It is such a simple question but the answer has evolved over time and is anything but simple.  By strict definition a family is made up of parents and their offspring who may or may not dwell together.  Today, families are much more broadly defined and the people in them may not be related by blood at all but may be sharing living space and operating as a family unit.  There are many, many possible definitions and as many interpretations of what is considered a family.  Whatever your description of family may be there is one aspect on which we can probably all agree and that is that a family, however defined, shares some sort of bond.  Roughly speaking, a family can be any group of people organized for a specific purpose such as a "crime family".  I submit that coaches are such a group, (not a crime family of course!), i.e., a group of people that have a common thread and purpose that binds them together.  Some of those commonalities are a code of ethics, guiding principles, core competencies, listening skills and a passion for helping our clients.

Like family members we are all different, each unique in his/her own way yet bringing all we are and all we are not to our family.  We may vary somewhat in our approaches and methodologies yet we are bound by a common purpose - to partner with and support our clients in making their lives better, more satisfying, even easier.  Analogous to siblings who are very close we are allies, associates, cohorts, buddies and sometimes accomplices.  We even have our own language with terms like powerful questioning, tolerations, presence, messaging, shifts and so forth!  Family members need each other and support their individual members despite their differences or when they disagree and coaches are very much like a family in that regard.  We come together to learn and grow and support one another as members of ICF Michigan or ICF Global and we embrace those differences because they make us stronger.

In the coming weeks your President-Elect and I will have the opportunity to attend the Global Leaders Forum.  We will meet our virtual brothers and sisters and our extended coaching family from ICF Chapters globally and we couldn't be more honored and excited to represent our Michigan family there and to bring back everything we learn!  The attendees will be a tremendously diverse group of individuals all eager to share knowledge, culture, ideas and wisdom from every corner of the world and yet we will have more in common than what makes us different.  We are coaches, we love coaching, we love our clients, we are unified in purpose.  We are family.

All the best,

Vicki
