ICF Michigan Newsletter
March 2013
Barb G Dear ICF Michigan Community,

Early this month, your ICF Michigan Board met for an entire day of conversation and planning. We started the day by engaging in a "Painted Picture" exercise where we envisioned ICF Michigan 3 years out (2016). It was more than a fun exercise to get our juices flowing - it was a form of strategic planning that intentionally tapped into the right side of the brain where we pictured the organization in visual terms, not just in words.

At the conclusion of the brainstorming process, we used colored markers to draw a picture that captured our imagination about ICF Michigan now and in the future. The image that emerged was that of strong tree with deep roots. The tree was housed (of course) in the state and landscape of Michigan, surrounded by natural resources that contribute to our viability. The metaphor of the tree is ancient and well-worn. Our use of the tree to symbolize ICF Michigan is not particularly unique, but it perfectly illustrates our deep desire to ...

  • be grounded in the ICF competencies and principles (root system),
  • provide a life-source to members through connectivity and service (trunk and branches),
  • be a source of joy and vitality to all coaches - those who are "advanced" in the profession and those who are new (leaves and fruit).

You are a vital part of this picture and contribute to ICF Michigan's longevity by choosing to be actively involved. Thank you to the many volunteers who are helping to grow our Michigan chapter and nurture its members.

If you are new to ICF Michigan (or not) and want to meet fellow coaches and get on board, please see the opportunities listed below and make time on your calendar for one or more of the upcoming events. Our ICF tree of life will only grow with your personal commitment and engagement. We are all responsible for nurturing and sustaining this wonderful organization for Michigan professional coaches.

(NOTE: the complete set of Board notes from the Painted Picture process will be posted on our website in the coming weeks. Stay tuned. )

Thanks to Kyle Kinder for responding to last month's Coaching Question:
What methods (or practices) have you found helpful in developing empathy?

Working with Leaders Around Empathy - Coaching Method

As a coach I try to "reframe" empathy by using evidence and results oriented language with leaders who don't see its value.  In fact, I try not to use the word "empathy" but instead introduce and discuss the research-based benefits of employee engagement (employee satisfaction, productivity, etc.) which can only be accomplished by being sensitive and connecting with employees.

Warm Regards,
Barb

Wow! NEW ICF Michigan Teleclass Pilot Project

ICF Michigan will be piloting a Teleclass program beginning late this spring/early summer.
