What's Your Brand?

Jackie Browning,
2017 Board Champion

As a professional coach, you no doubt know that having a presence on social media is now the norm. Coaches must brand themselves and provide proof of their expertise on multiple networks and platforms. Having an online footprint indicates you are a savvy coach who knows how to operate in the digital age.

Many professional coaches may feel reluctant to shine a light on their accomplishments. After all, we are more accustomed to supporting others' development than building a personal brand and online presence for ourselves.

In fact, branding doesn't come naturally for me. All too often I make self-sabotaging statements like:

"I don't like to brag about myself."

"I don't want to put myself out there," online.

"I don't have time for social networking".

Sound familiar? If so, it's time to get better clarity on what branding is - and what it isn't.

Personal branding is not bragging. It is about defining what makes you unique and valuable to the clients you are targeting. Differentiation is the key. What makes you stand apart from the rest?

One way to test your digital visibility is to Google yourself. If doing so yields few or no search results, you may be passed over for someone with a more vibrant online persona. If the search returns are for someone with the same name, consider adding a middle initial or some other variation of your name.

Your brand is "being yourself". It's your reputation, what people rely on you to deliver and what you're the go-to person for. It is the unique combination of personal qualities and skills that represent why you would be a good fit for your target clients - the things that make your profile an interesting read.

It's true that it takes a lot of time and effort to cultivate a strong brand, but it's a worthy investment in yourself that could help you land your next big opportunity.

INTERNATIONAL COACHING WEEK

International Coaching Week (ICW) was May 15-21, 2017! International Coaching Week (ICW) is an annual weeklong global celebration of the coaching profession. ICW is intended to educate the public about the value of a professional coach and to acknowledge the results and progress made through the coaching process.

The ICF Michigan Chapter kicked off the 2017 International Coaching week with a show of passion and depth at the Michigan Women's Foundation (MWF) Detroit office Monday, May 15, 2017. We provided pro bono group and individual coaching to business owners in their Accelerating Women Entrepreneurs program. The coaching enabled the business owners to experience coaching and its benefits firsthand. And, a few of the coaches acquired clients.

In addition, Cathy Mott and Tatiana Botta represented ICF Michigan at Trinity Health where Cathy facilitated a webinar on Coaching Presence.

Mark your calendar for May 2018 and next year let's expand the ICF Michigan Chapter footprint during international coaching.

OPPORTUNITY FOR PRO BONO COACHING

Looking for an excellent opportunity to offer pro bono coaching? Consider Women For Change, a non-profit organization that makes coaching accessible to lower-income women who are seeking to change their lives. The coaching program covers a 12-week period. If you are a credentialed coach with the International Coach Federation or International Association of Coaches, Jackie Browning can give you more information. Contact her at parkside@parksideconsultants.com and start bringing positive change to someone's life.
