This week I had my "Holy Cow!!" moment... August? Already?
Wow. Isn't it incredible how time flies? In my search for topics for
this newsletter I toyed with various ideas, but was magically pulled
back over and over to a question that Alan Seele, in his closing
keynote at the ICF Global Conference in Cleveland, asked us in June:
"What would you do, if you didn't have to know how?"
This question has been keeping me wonderfully busy ever since Alan
asked it, and I have posted this question to many around me since. It
has become a favorite of mine. Why? Because of the quizzical, then
thoughtful, then even dreamy looks on the faces of those I ask.
Because of the many inspiring answers and, most of all, because there
is much more to this question than meets the eye.
What would I do, if I didn't have to know how? Among many other
things, I would sail a boat to Bora Bora and I would build a portable
teleportation device to be able to see friends and family around the
globe face-to-face whenever I wanted. I would also be a big published
author... all of this, if I didn't have to know how.
What does the question really tap into? I truly believe it taps into
our dreams and desires. Things that we would love to see or do or
have; things that may seem unattainable - at first. But are they
really unattainable? Okay, the teleportation device probably is, but
what is the dream behind the dream? Where is a compromise? Where
could the compromise be? What do we already know? What other path
could lead us to fulfill this dream or desire?
Let us use my three answers. I would sail a boat to Bora Bora. What
is behind this one? To me it is not the desire to sail a boat. It
really is the desire to visit Bora Bora. It has been for many, many
years. What is the desire behind the teleporter? It is the wish to be
closer to my friends and family around the globe, to communicate, to
share, and to be close to them - to not loose touch. And in being a
published author? It may be a mix of wanting to be a really good
writer and the courage to put more of my ideas out there.
What do I already have or know? Answering these questions is what
leads to a compromise or onto a path of being able to somehow fulfill
this dream or desire. It helps me create a plan. I can visualize what
I want and revisit this vision everyday. I can even get emotional
about it to better manifest it, and I can reflect on it before I go
What are the compromises for me? This is where I can really set the
intention that will lead me. I can fly to Bora Bora and I do plan on
celebrating a special birthday there. I will continue to write and
maybe even daredevil my way to a blog. As for the teleporter... for
now I'll grab the phone... I will be in touch more often in as many
ways as I can.
What would you do, if you didn't have to know how? What is the deeper
desire and where is the compromise? How can you use this for yourself
and how could you use this in your coaching? Please feel free to
share what you would do on our Facebook page. Also, as this is my
favorite coaching question, please feel free to share your favorite
As a teenager, my wish was to study psychology but I studied business
administration instead. My wish back then already was to work with
people and engage them to dream big and grow. Now I am (finally) a
coach. The compromise - and a really good one at that. ICF Michigan
is a big part of this path. To be a part of your path, ICF Michigan
strives to offer many opportunities to connect, learn, and share. See
below for all updates on TeleClasses and Coach Cafés. Please make
sure to mark your calendars for the ICF Michigan State Conference on
October 23rd and, if you haven't already, please remember to renew
your ICF Michigan membership.
Until next time, dream big and stay energized,

SUSANNE'S QUOTE FOR THE MONTH
"Without leaps of imagination, or dreaming, we
lose the excitement of possibilities. Dreaming, after all, is a
form of planning."
