Spring Cleaning

Kaan Aksu, 2019 Board Champion,Member Relations

Time flies! We are already in April. While it is typical to have last few snowy days in our lovely Michigan, we have started to witness nature's efforts to wake up from the long winter sleep. "Spring is nature`s way of saying, 'Let`s party!" as Robin Williams once said.  I even saw the first Blue Jay two weeks ago... yes, the spring is here!

We typically have New Year's Resolutions at the beginning of the year... mostly out of guilt for how to get rid of the extra weight from the holiday season.  If we are to follow the process in the nature, spring is actually the season that real renewal and rejuvenation starts around us.

'Spring Cleaning' is different than just tidying up or cleaning around the house. It is more about replacing what will not serve us anymore, such as warmer winter clothes; getting rid of the clutter from the yard, like torn branches through winter; even painting around the house and fences to give them a fresh look, matching the colors of the season.

I am a little more interested in 'Spring Cleaning' this year, because I have recently watched a few episodes of 'Tidying up with Marie Kondo' on Netflix. In this series, renowned tidying expert Marie Kondo tries to help people declutter their homes -- and their lives.

She teaches people her method for tidying up at once and for good. She encourages them to sort out what they want to hold on to by only focusing on how much joy it brings to them, rather than starting with the purpose to throw away things. She makes them aware that we all have a different sense for attachment, so she will not make the choice or guide them for what to keep... it is very personal to decide what brings us real joy. I think she is a very successful Tidying Up Coach!

She encourages the tidying up to happen in specific categories to be most effective. First clothes, then books, then papers, then general miscellaneous things... The last category in her cleaning process is 'the sentimental possessions'. These are the belongings, which we keep as a reminder of the beautiful memories from the past. During the years, we accumulate so many of them that until we notice, our basement, cellar or even the garage gets fully occupied with boxes that we might not even have seen for a long time. (There is a reason why American Storage Industry has grown to 2.3 Billion square foot) Getting rid of these possessions is the hardest part for most people on the show, because it requires dealing with letting go of the attachment to the past and take a decision to focus only on what is needed in the present and store only those items for the future.

Her passion and unique approach intrigued my coaching mind to find answers to many open ended questions.

What change would you experience, if you start decluttering your house with the motivation to find out only what brings you sense of joy? How would you apply this experience into your life? What difference would it make to sort your relationships and life choices based on only how they affect your well-being positively?

How would you feel, when you decide to get rid of some tangible things that have had meaning at some point in your life, but don't bring value anymore... your children`s school reports, their favorite toys, a collection which you were very passionate about in the past, but not interested anymore? How would your life change, when you take a decision to make peace with that memory from your past?

I think refreshing our answers to these kinds of questions from time to time is necessary to self-tune our awareness and maintain a life with minimal clutter, tangible or emotional. When we have this habit as coaches ourselves, we can also create an impact in our clients' lives and in the broader world more naturally.

'New Year's Resolutions' are a little 'out' at this time of the year, but it is the perfect time to decide how to apply uncluttering in your own life and coaching business!

Enjoy the 'Spring Cleaning'!
