Why is an ICF credential important?
|
|
|
Mary Jo Asmus, Founding Member
and Past President
|
I'm proud to have an ICF credential and the rigor it
takes to get and keep one.
Yet I've been where many of you are or may be - in a place of
questioning the importance of having an ICF credential. It is a lot
of work and it costs money after all, and (as I've heard time and
time again), "Nobody ever asks me if I have credential".
This may be true until that day when someone does ask because it's
important to them. If that happens (as it did to me) you could answer
in the affirmative to this individual who may hold your fate in their
hands.
That "yes" answer determined whether or not I would be a
part of a coaching pool for a Fortune company with the potential for
satisfying ongoing work with high potential and high performing
leaders. I've been in that pool for several years.
What makes having this credential important to you and what you're
trying to achieve as coach?
Self-confidence
that you are a professional coach. You have proof, after all, that
you're using well-respected core competencies (many that have
evidence-based research and brain science to back them up). Not only
that, but you use an ethical code and you've been recognized by the
largest coaching organization in the world! Your confidence comes in
knowing that you are a credentialed coach who uses proven skills and
processes to be at your best for your clients.
Ongoing learning
in the form of CCE's to renew or apply for a new credential. You are
continuing to educate yourself in the work of coaching. This keeps
you fresh in the rich information that is out there about the latest
in our profession.
A leg up
on other coaches who don't have a credential who may be competing for
the same clients that you want to have in a market crowded with
coaches. In other words, using that credential to market yourself can
put you ahead of coaches who haven't had coach-specific training, a
code of ethics, and required ongoing learning and
There are thousands of coaches out there who don't have the training,
experience, ethics and dedication to excellence that an ICF
credentialed coach has. Why wouldn't you want to be recognized as
among the best?
