ICF Michigan Reaches Out to the Human Resources Community

In an attempt to grow our presence and develop awareness in the HR community, ICF Michigan with the support of ICF Global, exhibited at the 2017 Michigan Society for Human Resource Management (MISHRM) conference in Grand Rapids in October.

This is our second year, exhibiting at this trade show, and was an opportunity for ICF Michigan and ICF Global to build a presence within the HR community, to grow outside our traditional coaching market, and to increase awareness of the benefits of coaching in general and the value of credentials in particular. It was also an opportunity to offer our ICF Michigan members the opportunity to reach out to the people who often are the gatekeeper to hiring coaches.

Our conversations with HR Leaders confirmed a number of trends such as organizations moving from a command-and-control style of leadership to a coaching style. According to Nicole Beckerman in Moving Toward a Coaching Leadership Style there is a shift toward building organizational coaching cultures. The 2016 ICF Global Coaching Study also indicates that coaching is being used by more organizations, small to large and in more ways.

We also learned that:

  • Coaching is being positively leveraged to develop individuals, teams, and organizations at the systemic and cultural level
  • More HR leaders, employees and senior executives value coaching
  • A line item in the budget is increasingly dedicated to coaching
  • Managers and leaders (or internal coach practitioners) spend above-average time on weekly coaching activities
  • More managers and leaders (or internal coach practitioners) received accredited coach training

As this overall trend is driving HR leaders to look at developing a culture of coaching within their organization, they showed an eager interest to learn about the following:

  • Coaching in general and coaching core competencies
  • The role of ICF and our various activities
  • The value of certification and the value of having a "stamp of quality"
  • Where and how to find certified coaches, and access a list of certified coaches
  • How to become a coach

So, until the next MISHRM conference in Traverse City, ICF Michigan will be actively learning more about the growing trends of the Coaching industry as it relates to HR as we look to find more and relevant ways to provide value to our members
