ICF Michigan Newsletter

October 2015

"Make it a habit to tell people thank you. To express your appreciation, sincerely and without the expectation of anything in return. Truly appreciate those around you, and you'll soon find many others around you. Truly appreciate life, and you'll find that you have more of it."

- Ralph Marston

Rebecca Kraus, 2015 ICF Michigan President

Dear ICF Michigan Coaches,

As I sit at my kitchen table looking out the window at the gorgeous red and gold trees this sunny October morning, I am filled with appreciation. On Thursday, October 15th, I had the great pleasure as President to attend our 11th Annual Statewide Conference in Okemos, MI. What a wonderful day!  For those who were not able to attend, you missed an AWESOME experience.

Our theme, "Optimizing Balance: Your Business, Your Life" provided a day's immersion in learning and experiencing ways to care for ourselves and our clients. The Conference Planning Committee structured a wonderful day featuring nationally renowned health and wellness keynote speaker Chris Johnson, 4 break-out sessions and an AMAZING TED-style session with several of our Michigan pioneer coaches.

With Conference Chair Susan Combs, it was a thrill to welcome 60 attendees to Okemos!  Susan shared that PCAM (now ICF Michigan) had been literally founded in her living room 11 years ago. She then acknowledged those Past Presidents in our audience who were in attendance. I had the pleasure of introducing our great Board of Directors and Conference Planning Committee. Hats off to the following 2015 Conference Committee Members for their wonderful work and commitment on such a perfect day! There were:

Susan Combs, Chair

Gwendolyn Esco Davis

Andrea Fleischfresser

Beki Fraser

Diane Norris

Gail Walter

Carol Winslow

Jan Martínez & Lisa Bradley-Mitchell, Board Champions

Chris Johnson, a nationally renowned health and wellness coach and consultant kicked off the Conference as our Keynote, educating us on healthy living and eating. I think I speak for many when I say, who knew orange flavor cod liver oil could taste that good?  How may knew how good it is for you? Seriously, Chris's presentation was incredibly informative and he did a masterful job in showing us how we could dramatically, positively impact our lives and our health by eating well.

Our morning breakout sessions were Building Resilience to Optimize Balance and Performance, with Dan Johnson and How Mindfulness Can Make You A Better Coach, with Cynthia Knapp Diugosz. I wish I could have attended both, but as I haven't quite figured out how to do that quite yet, I chose one and found it wonderfully informative. Same for our two afternoon sessions, Origin of The Universe Qi Gong: Tapping into The Wisdom of The Body, with Eric Couillard and Making Room for Balance and Change: Simple Strategies to Identify, Motivate and Develop Habits to Tackle Clutter, with Carol Winslow. Feedback from these sessions as our morning speakers was extremely enthusiastic!

Our luncheon program consisted of great food, conversation and the opportunity to recognize our wonderful volunteers for whom ICF Michigan could not exist. Our glorious 2015 volunteers include:

For the first time ICF Michigan experienced a TED-style session with 3 Michigan coaches, Sandy Carter, Rob Elliott and Julie Norris. Not having attended a session of this type, I really had no idea what to expect. For those not there you missed an amazing experience! The personal stories, experiences, observations and learnings shared by Sandy, Julie and Rob were spell-binding; people truly sat at rapt attention. I strongly suspect this segment will appear at our 2016 conference!  Thank you all!

What a wonderful day; such great speakers! It was so wonderful to see those who I had not spoken to in a while and from the sound of buzzing around the rooms at break-out times coaches from around the state were SERIOUSLY connecting and reconnecting! I was thrilled with the New Member Lunch table where new members ate lunch with Member Relations Co-Chair and Board Member Vicki Hepler and had questions about ICF Michigan membership answered for them. At the Volunteer Table, Board Members Sandy Marshall and Nadine Henry distributed our Volunteer Certificates and signed up new volunteers. Such great teamwork amongst our Board members!

I would also like to acknowledge our wonderful Virtual Administrator, Kathy Vlietstra!  ICF Michigan runs well due in no small part due to Kathy. From managing correspondence, to supporting us at the registration table at conferences, to handling our membership list, and on and on and on, she is an indispensable member of our Administrative Team. For many, this is the first person you may meet with our Chapter. I hope you had the opportunity to chat with Kathy as you received your program packet. Kathy, a million thanks for all you do for us!

Our day ended with Board Member and Conference Committee Champion Jan Martinez calling our speakers and Committee members forward for a moving silent thank you from the audience. It was so powerful and I hope all felt the appreciation pouring over them.

I left the conference feeling a sense of pride and overwhelming appreciation. I reflected upon all that our chapter has achieved in 2015 as well as the goodness and generosity of those who have helped ICF Michigan through their service, volunteerism and attendance at our events. I basked in the warmth of the comments from a number of attendees as to what the conference meant to them. And I thought - we indeed are a community of coaches, who are so strong, and are so powerful when we support and lift each other up. Today was proof!

It is an honor to count myself as one with you.

DID YOU REMEMBER TO RENEW YOUR ICF MICHIGAN MEMBERSHIP?

JUNE 2015 was ICF Membership renewal month!
Beginning in 2015, ICF Michigan has moved our renewal calendar to start our membership year in the month of June. A new membership or a renewal would therefore span from June 2015-June 2016.

Please note that a membership in ICF does not automatically make the person an ICF Michigan member. At the time of joining or renewing your ICF membership you are asked during the process to provide or confirm your local chapter. We encourage you to name ICF Michigan as your home chapter. The ICF Michigan chapter membership fee is separate and in addition to the ICF fee. If you choose not to join ICF, you may still belong to ICF Michigan by utilizing our ICF Michigan Associate Membership classification. It provides a number of the educational benefits the full ICF Member classification, but limits voting and committee participation.

Don't miss benefiting from all we as a chapter have as resources for our members.
