The Art of Happiness

I recently had the opportunity to read Zen and the Art of Happiness by Chris Prentiss. Little did I know when a friend shared the book with me that it would be life changing. Since having read it, I have recommended it as a must read to a number of coaching clients.

In our lives and the lives of our clients, circumstances often occur that are baffling, frustrating, tragic, and joyous. Our ability to handle these situations and come through them successfully can take a significant toll on our emotional being, our happiness, and our peace. We may be forever changed by a loss, or we may struggle to recover from a personal catastrophe that knocks us down and causes us to question if we can go on.

What if there was a way to rethink and emotionally reorient ourselves in these times? What if we found meaning and value regardless of the pain? What if there was actual benefit? Indeed, within the Zen philosophy, THERE IS.

I am not a student of Eastern philosophies and religions, so I apologize for my feeble explanation. If you think about it, we are all a part of the Universe. Some thing or being, regardless of your beliefs, created us. As such, the Universe or this divine being only wants the best for us. It watches over us, seeking our fulfillment and happiness. We are on a path of life that the "Universe" knows and sees and, therefore, every thing that happens to us is not accidental. It happens when it "should" happen. We can't rush it. We can't control it. The Universe wants only the best for us, as we are a part of it. Ultimately we will see the benefit in the circumstance, loss, or whatever we experience. The value, meaning, and benefit will ultimately show itself when the Universe is ready.

As I read those words, I was instantly struck how painful and tragic moments that scarred me, my loved ones, and my friends had all ultimately proven to have great meaning and benefit, gifting us in some amazing way.  I found myself finding greater peace, enjoying moments more deeply than ever before.

I wish all of you peace and happiness in your lives, guided by a divine spirit that wants the best for each of us.
