The Power and Being of Intention

by Susanne Cordes-Hoelterhoff

When I was asked me to contribute to the newsletter I was transported back into my time as ICF Michigan President - and found myself reminiscing. I thought about who I was going into that year and who I was going out of that year. How was I different? What guided me? Much of it was the power of intention.

It was the urge to get active, to give back, to make a difference, to set goals and reach them...and to watch what unfolds.

A fellow coach once said to me, "When you really want something, the universe will conspire to make it happen."

What is the first thing that comes to your mind when you think of the power of intention?  Deliberation? Clarity? Purpose? Intentionality? Being present? There is the part about understanding the 'intention behind the intention' and knowing that 'Where your intention goes, your energy flows.' In a way it is everything. What you experience is the result of the quality of your intentions.

An intention is much like a SMART goal. With clarity and belief in the purpose of our intentions, we start to move towards fulfilling them with focus and deliberate actions. And, yes, everything we experience will be the result of the quality and commitment to this intention. The universe is our "partner in crime" yet there is still one more thing: Who are we being in our intentions?

There is no doing without being, and rarely is there being without doing. While I served as president of this wonderful chapter, I had set for myself the intention of being a leader I would want to follow myself. And this wasn't just about the doing, it was also about the being. Setting an intention is the first step and acting on it demonstrates our commitment to it - and the being is a big factor in achieving. It wasn't just about the tasks and the motions, but also about being a role model, walking the talk, and having feet and mouth pointing in the same direction. It was about honesty, integrity, authenticity, a sense of humor, and thoroughly enjoying what I was doing. It was also about setting boundaries, learning to disconnect, and knowing when it was time to hit the yoga mat. I was working on being the person I would respect for all these reasons and my time on the board let me grow and learn-be and become.

I am grateful for the opportunity to reflect on this part of my journey and to share it with you. How are you aligning your doing and being in your intentions? What are you discovering? Be your intention and the universe will conspire.
