Rebecca Kraus, 2015 ICF Michigan President

Dear ICF Michigan Community Coaches,

As I sat contemplating the topic for this month's newsletter, I realized how much goes on behind the scenes of ICF Michigan each month that I am privileged to report on to you. Every month, our Board members and Committee team members are reviewing, analyzing, designing collaborating, and implementing ideas, processes or programs to make us a stronger, more valued organization for you, our chapter members and associates. As we celebrate Coaches Week, it seems a fitting time to reflect on what we do as a Chapter to support your work and calling as a coach.

From our beginnings 11 years ago as the Professional Coaches Association of Michigan, founded in Lansing, to today as ICF Michigan, our chapter has been built upon the passion and commitment of dedicated coaches. Over the years, chapter Board members and Committee team members sought to build an organization that connected coaches in all corners of Michigan and then beyond our borders with the shared belief in the value of coaching and a special sense of being part of a fraternity, a family, honored to carry out this work. Today, we have over 140 members, with coaches from across upper and lower Michigan, other states and now foreign countries. Our programs are attended by individuals well beyond our Michigan borders and we are energized by the growth of our offerings and the positive reception they have received.

As we've grown, our need for an infrastructure to support our organization has evolved. You have probably noticed that our website has changed significantly over the last several years. Starting with former Presidents Mary Jo Asmus and then Barb Grigsby, our website serves as the public face and portal conveying who we are and what we provide to our members. Overseeing the website this year is our Secretary, Lisa Bradley-Mitchell, supported by our wonderful Virtual Administrator Kathy Vlietstra and tech support. Lisa has just completed a sweep of our website to ensure our information is up to date and current. As you can imagine, as we do more, there is more to convey and our website is continuously changing. If you do not visit our website on a regular basis I encourage you to do so at www.icfmichigan.org. Check out what is happening this month and in the months to come!

ICF Michigan provides opportunities for learning, networking and collaboration with fellow coaches via telecafés, face to face cafes, teleclasses and our annual conference. This happens through the support and collaboration of a number of ICF Michigan members. The vast majority of what we do is accomplished by volunteers. Expenses incurred in maintaining our website, hosting the annual conference, creating materials to promote increased visibility of coaching, etc. are all overseen by our Treasurer, Darren Johnson. Our funds to do all these things come from just three sources; your annual membership fee, an ICF stipend provided per each member who declares ICF Michigan as your "home" chapter, and third, any additional dollars we might raise through our conference or teleclass programs' attendance by non-ICF Michigan members/guests. It is Darren's responsibility to manage our finances and he does a great job informing the Board each month as to our current status.

In mentioning all our educational offerings you may not know that our largest Committee is Education and Development, led by Board Champion Kathy Munoz. Kathy oversees the program development and running of all our classes and cafes, virtual and face to face. These programs come alive through the efforts of a team of coach committee members, hosts/hostesses and facilitators with events occurring practically every week in a given month. These individuals design, deliver and continuously strive to improve their respective programs - true commitment at its best! Rather than single out one person and miss another, let me simply say that the dedicated efforts of these individuals are instrumental for bringing the experience, value and power of ICF Michigan to you.

Internally, we realized that the portal to ICF Michigan is also through our membership efforts. As such, we are re-assessing our membership efforts and evolving into what we now call Member Relations. Board Champion Mary Selzer and Committee Chair Vicki Hepler and team are re-engineering our touch points with our members, working to increase our communications, support and ultimate value proposition for you as Chapter members and Associates.

As a Chapter, raising awareness of what we do and solidifying our brand so that ICF Michigan and you, our member coaches are known, and can be found (!) is the responsibility of our Marketing Committee. Our Board Champion Nadine Henry with assistance from Past President Susanne Cordes-Hoelterhoff continue to evolve our brand and communications with organizations, coaches and the public. Due to their efforts, ICF Michigan participated in its' first HR Day in Lansing, Michigan, staffing a table with Board members Lisa and Darren to promote ICF Michigan and you to an audience of over 1,000 attendees representing Human Resource departments from across the state.

To further reach into the community and share the power of coaching with those in need, several years ago we launched the Community Outreach Committee. Created by Board Champion Sandy Marshall, Community Outreach has provided a means to provide bro-bono coaching to individuals and groups in need while serving to give coaches a means to earn pro-bono coaching credits as well as to simply "give back." Through the efforts of ICF Michigan coaches, people from around the Midwest today are realizing their best selves as a result of the services of an ICF Michigan Community Outreach coach!

Finally, I want to highlight our Board of Directors. Our current Board is comprise of 10 people, all who not only function as a Board member attending monthly 2 hour conference calls, attend 2 - full day retreats, spring and fall, respond to emails from me and others AND head up or participate in one of our Committees or oversee one of our infrastructure areas. These individuals work with me to lead ICF Michigan into the future through inquiry, debate, benchmarking and personal service to the Chapter, all while taking care of families and running their own businesses. My indebtedness to them and to all who help support our work can not be overstated.

Although small in size compared to the mega Chapters of 800-1,000 members, ICF Michigan is becoming increasingly known as one of the nation's most active, value rich Chapters. On behalf of all of who encompass the 2015 team, thank you for being a part of this great Chapter. We look forward to your continued support through your membership your participation at our events and Committees!
