Yes, the sun
is shining again... and with the promise of spring, it feels as
though a new energy is flowing through the cells of my body. An urge
to get more active, to get back out there, to set new goals and to
reach them, to set new intentions...and watch what unfolds, to feel
the power of intention.
A great friend
and fellow coach said to me, "When you really want something,
the universe will conspire to make it happen." Is that the power
Or is there
more to it than setting an intention and then letting the universe do
At the last
ICF Michigan Coach Café in Royal Oak, I asked the question,
"What is the first thing that comes to your mind when you think
of the power of intention?"
some of the answers:
Focus and "What you focus on gets done"
Understanding the intention behind the intention
"Where your intention goes, your energy flows"
- That it is
everything...that what you experience is the result
quality of your intentions.
is a goal, a wish, a dream, something I really want or want to
happen. And, as we coaches know, a SMART goal is:
S = specific
M = measurable
A = attainable
R = realistic
T = time specific.
Doesn't that also work with our intentions? If we are clear about
them and truly understand and believe the purpose of our intention,
we start to move towards fulfilling this intention with focus and
deliberate actions. And, yes, everything we experience will be the
result of the quality and commitment to this intention. The universe
is our "partner in crime" yet the biggest leap is still up
So when you
"lose" or discontinue something, aren't you really creating
space for something new, better, or bigger? Is that change not
serving your intention, and isn't the universe in the midst of
intention is a first step and to act on it demonstrates your
commitment to it. Here are a few things I do to help the universe
get very specific about my wish or intention. I'm clear about
the purpose of it. Some may chose to write it down, I visualize
it and commit that picture to my memory.
share it with somebody, and I do that in a way that it will hold
try to do something every day to demonstrate my commitment to
this intention. This can be as funky as envisioning myself doing
exactly what that intention is.
acknowledge the things I have done [for it] as I said I would
and then take the next step.
allow things to happen, as I firmly believe that everything will
come together in the end.
My good friend also said that if that one intention or wish doesn't
come through, that it is simply because the universe has something
better up its sleeve.
What comes to
your mind when you think about the power of intention? How does this
show up in your personal life and in your coaching? What intentions
have you set now that spring is on the verge of (finally) springing?
