Avoiding an Addiction to Busyness

Have you noticed how, despite technology that is intended to streamline our lives, we are busier than ever? Multi-tasking is the new norm and busyness has become the latest addiction. We are often driven to fill every free minute, sometimes double-booking or overlapping appointments.

Recently I read the story of a man who lived a fast-paced life and one day hit the wall of burnout head-on. He visited his doctor who suggested he go to the beach and spend a day without radio, phone, or any other interruption. He then proceeded to write out four prescriptions. After folding and numbering each one, the doctor said, "Take these at 9, 12, 3, and 6."

As the man tried to follow the first prescription - Listen carefully - time seemed to crawl. But he obeyed and took in the noise of the crashing waves, as well as the sounds within his own spirit. At noon he opened the second prescription - Try reaching back. He sat in silence as events of past years, both painful and pleasant, swept through his mind. At three o'clock he began the third prescription - Reexamine your motives. He tried to rationalize within himself, insisting there was nothing wrong with his motives. Then he realized that if his motives weren't right, nothing else would be right either. By six o'clock he was ready for his fourth dose- Write Your worries in the sand. By the time he left the beach, his worries had been washed away, leaving a clean slate of sand.

As coaches, we owe it to our clients to keep ourselves mentally, emotionally, and physically healthy. Every now and then, find your "beach" and take healthy doses of the above-mentioned prescription. It's the best preventative for an unhealthy addiction to busyness.
