The Changing of the Guard

At the beginning of each year, there is a lot of talk about making changes. Changing habits, changing jobs, changing patterns of behavior- the list goes and on and on.  After just a few weeks, much of the talk will cease and the intended changes will be forgotten or set aside for another time.  An exception to this annual charade is an event known as the Changing of the Guard. In Wikipedia1 it states the Changing of the Guard "refers to a formal ceremony in which sentries providing ceremonial guard duties at important institutions are relieved by a new batch of sentries."  Many countries have these types of ceremonies, where sentries are guarding gates, palaces, castles, residences of royalty or tombs. The ceremonies vary widely, but do share several commonalities, such as precision, symbolism, focus and passion.  Typically, the guards or sentinels are highly skilled and dedicated professionals who take their duties quite seriously. In my own experience, I have witnessed the Changing of the Guard for the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery in Washington, D.C.  I was quite moved by the ceremony and was very impressed with the skill and precision with which it was executed!

As a metaphor, a "changing of the guard" refers to a situation in which there is a significant change or to a time in which people in positions of importance are being replaced.  At the outset of each year, there is a changing of the guard in ICF Michigan.  On your Board, we have both returning and newly elected Directors who are anxious to begin serving each of you and the Chapter throughout the year.  This change may not be elaborate or ceremonious, but I would propose that the passion, dedication and focus of this group is not unlike that of those sentinels chosen for the aforementioned Guard Mounting.  We aim to work diligently this year to provide events and services that will both enrich your experiences as a professional coach as well as enhance your businesses.

It is a privilege and an honor for me to work with and lead such an accomplished collection of individuals: Beki Fraser, Jackie Browning, Nadine Henry, Andrea Fleischfresser, Dmitry Kondratyev, Cedric McSween, Cathy Mott and Nan Reed Twiss.  As everyone knows, our Immediate Past President, Mary Selzer, has certainly left to me some very big shoes to fill!  I am confident that in working together, we will continue to move ICF Michigan forward and further the great work done by Mary, prior Presidents, Board Directors and team members on your behalf.

Throughout the year, I hope to meet many of you in person or virtually at the various events and conferences available through both ICF Michigan and ICF Global.  We look forward to serving you in 2017 and beyond. Let's make it a great year!
