ICF Michigan Newsletter

January 2016

Mary Selzer, 2016 ICF Michigan President

Dear Fellow Coaches,

Almost ten years ago, I stumbled upon the coaching profession quite by accident. I was attending a conference where the main speaker taught a session on an Introduction to Coaching. Prior to that enlightening exposure, I thought all coaches functioned in a sports arena or football field. Frankly, I had no interest in the topic, and I longed for the session to end-until the speaker distinguished between counseling, mentoring, consulting and coaching. "Coaches work with healthy people and healthy issues," she said, "moving them forward toward their intended goals." I saw up in my seat as the lightbulb came on. I realized I had been working with the wrong types of people, using the wrong skill sets. Now I wanted to learn more.

Within a few months, I entered a coach-training program, and my life has never been the same. I joined ICF, ICF Michigan, and almost immediately became active on one of the committees. I never dreamed that one day I would serve on the board of directors, let alone become president of this great chapter.

For those who don't know who I am, let me briefly fill you in. My husband and I are Eastsiders (St. Clair Shores). We have two daughters and 4.5 grandchildren-all living out of state. I serve as a coach to leaders and executives of non-profits, and am also a coach trainer and mentor/coach. I love to read, and have authored a couple of books, including 25 Questions God Asked-Discover the Answers That Will Change Your Life (available September, 2016).

My last four years of service on our chapter's board have been a valuable learning experience. Each of the presidents I served under have impacted my life. Mary Jo Asmus taught me the importance of maintaining balance in life and work; Barb Grigsby inspired our entire chapter by showing us how to persevere while battling a serious illness; Susanne Cordes-Hoelterhoffer has endless passion for everything she does-she has taken my breath away more than once; Rebecca Kraus is a strategic thinker who is filled with wisdom.

Now I guess it's my turn. I am truly humbled and, truthfully, feel a bit incompetent. Fortunately, I'm surrounded with board members who are gifted, dedicated, and passionate. We are all very much aware we are only building on a foundation that has been carefully laid over the years by many capable leaders and active members. It is a solid foundation that we hope leads to a fruitful year of growth and development.

Let's plan to work together and fulfill our chapter's vision to be the thought leaders pursuing excellence in the coaching profession.

Enjoy your day!

Mary Selzer
2016 ICF Michigan President
