A Coaching Dichotomy

Have you ever had one of those "aha" moments when you said to yourself, "Why didn't I think of this before?" The "aha" lightbulb came on for me late last year, and it shed light on an area of my life that needed to change.

I was preparing to facilitate one of our monthly Core Competency calls, where we teach, model, and discuss each of the ICF core competencies. As I prepared the material, I became aware of how my life had become segmented between my "coaching self" and my "real self." When wearing my coaching hat, I carefully followed the competencies, being aware of my active listening, coaching presence, powerful questions, etc. But, once the coaching hat came off, I became a little careless. If I lost interest in a conversation with a friend, I sneaked periodic glances at my texts. My listening became more passive than active, and I wasn't as mindful about how I worded my comments or questions. My life certainly was not consistent.

There is a difference between being a coach and doing coaching. I had the "doing" part down, but the "being" was lacking. It dawned on me if I wanted to be a coach, I would need to incorporate the coaching values into every aspect of my life, not just in my business.

What if we treated everyone, including family and friends, with as much value as we treat our clients? Imagine guarding people's confidences as carefully as we protect our client's. Gossip might die a much-needed death. What if we truly listened when other people spoke-no matter how boring their topic? People would feel extremely valued. What if we took enough interest in others by encouraging them to take action, set goals, and engage accountability? They would take more responsibility for their actions and learn the freedom of independence.

I'm still working on it, but I'm positive it will be well worth the effort. As one person said, "If you are persistent, you will get it. If you are consistent, you will keep it." Change for the good is always worth pursuing, isn't it?
