Alone, Together

Beki Fraser,
2017 ICF Michigan President-elect

Our Board President and I had a wonderful opportunity to travel to Warsaw, Poland, for the Global Leaders Forum in late March. This has become an annual event for ICF chapter leaders around the world to gather and discuss the opportunities facing the International Coach Federation.

Surrounded by 200 like-minded leaders in the coaching industry from 68 countries, you can imagine the conversations were insightful and thought-provoking. Our keynote speaker, Kjell Nordström, is a futurist and economist who created a strong response to his beliefs about rapid urbanization, digitization of knowledge and future economics of the world.

A bulk of our time was spent considering the opportunities and potential for coaching and how we can benefit as an industry. We are growing in numbers and geography and currently ICF Global has 30,000 members from 140 countries. The focus of the forum was Leading into the Future and and specifically about continuing the excellence, relevance and strong global voice for our work.

One of the points in Dr. Nordström's message was the idea of being 'alone, together'. In the context of our growing industry, this truly struck me. Many of us operate as solopreneurs or in small teams to achieve our individual goals with clients. We operate independently; however, we have a strong connection to one another within the family of ICF and more locally as ICF Michigan.

Active participation in the Board and with the community of ICF Michigan has marked me, as a bonafide 'non-joiner', in a significant way. Periodically, each of us might feel a bit lonely within our business and within our work. I encourage you to remember the positive and supportive network within our chapter. We have so many amazing things in play already and even more to come. The energy, the comradery and the invigorating discussion of the Global Leaders Forum re-ignited me.

Please do think about how you can also live and work 'alone, together' in a way that supports you and others in your community. Each individual is important to the whole.
