"Sometimes, reaching out and taking someone's hand
is the beginning of a journey. At other times,
it is allowing another to take yours."

- Vera Nazarian, The Perpetual Calendar of Inspiration

Rebecca Kraus, 2015 ICF Michigan President

Dear ICF Michigan Community Coaches,

Spring has FINALLY arrived!  If there was any doubt, Mother Nature has made it very clear that winter has been shown the door! As I write this column today, soft breezes, the warmth of sun on our faces, the smell of the awakening earth- ah, it is my favorite time of the year!

It is a time of new beginnings at ICF Michigan as well. This past week I had the pleasure of attending two of our Coaching Cafés, Royal Oak and Ann Arbor. Both of these Café's are being headed up by new facilitators who are destined to put their unique stamp on the experience when attending these gatherings.

April 10th meant the second Friday of the month and the Royal Oak Café, held at the delightful Goldfish Tea Café, 117 W.4th Street, Royal Oak. The café starts at 8:30am. Our new facilitator, Jan Martinez, succeeds 2014 ICF Michigan President Susanne Cordes-Hoelterhoff in leading the monthly session, and like Susanne, she is bringing such energy and commitment to our coaches as they participate in lively dialogue.

On April 17th I traveled to Ann Arbor and the kick-off of the Ann Arbor Café. I can't believe this was my first visit!  Not only is this one on my most favorite places in our state, I was dazzled by the coaches and the excitement brought by new facilitators Nadine Henry and Nan Reed Twiss.

As you may know, the Ann Arbor Café has been expertly guided by Deb Nystrom for the last four years. Deb has decided the time had come to pass the reins, and our new 2015 Board member Nadine answered the call. She has now teamed with Nan to facilitate these monthly cafés held at the Zola Bistro, 3030 Washtenaw, Ann Arbor, the third Friday of the month. The café starts at 9:30am. Delicious food with an extraordinary group of 8 coaches came together to help re-launch the café and identify future topics of discussion and personal areas of interest.  This Café is destined to be one rocking place to be! As with the Royal Oak Café, I was struck by the incredible mix of backgrounds and talents assembled, all coaches, all passionate about bringing their best to coaching and their clients. From life coaches, to career coaches, to executive coaches these diverse groups included authors, professors, researchers, planners - a wealth of experience and perspectives.

While I was attending Café's in SE Michigan, in West Michigan and the Grand Rapids area new facilitator Marsha Barnosky has been busy kicking off our third café! Dates for this café are the following Thursdays: May 14th, September 10 and November 12, 9-10:30am, 1410 84th Street SW, Byron Center, MI 49315 - Office of Angela Musselman, PhD. Our West-side state coaches have been real trail blazers in putting together outstanding programs and forums and this Café is destined to be the same.

Driving home from Ann Arbor, I though about what it was I so loved about attending cafés. I realized that for me, a sole business owner, I work alone a great deal and at times can get a bit lonely. I also realize that in working alone that I might at times get cut off from new ideas or perspectives that only collaboration and connection can bring. Attending coaching gatherings, whether face-to-face or virtual help fill that need, providing, interaction, support, knowledge, friendship. As I said to one coach, "it is like a long cool drink of water when you've been in the desert."

Connection with our fellow coaches isn't limited to our ICF Michigan Cafés. Our virtual cafés bring the experience to us right into our offices or homes. Gail Walter leads our state-side telecall the first Friday of the month at 9:00am. The phone in number is (712) 432-0360 PIN: 293548#. How exciting to share and learn with coaches from across the state!

To the North, Lori Kerlin continues her outstanding leadership of the Northern Michigan Virtual Çafé, the second Monday of the month at 10:00am.Log into Skype at the appropriate time and do a search for "Lori Kerlin" to join. How cool! SEE you soon Lori!

And the Michigan Telecafé! What a great idea - a "café" on the phone for coaches across the state! Join host Gail Walter and your fellow coaches every month for thought-provoking conversation and the opportunity to "mingle" with your peers. Mark your calendar now for the 1st Friday of the month at 9:00 am ET.  Teleconference # 712-432-0360 PIN# 293548#.  Contact Gail Walter for more information or questions.

For more experienced coaches, Mary Jo Asmus hosts the Experienced Coaches Bi-Monthly Tele-forums. These wonderful calls are held on various Wednesdays, every other month at 4:00PM. Watch for our blasts or check out the website for the next date! These calls are truly outstanding.

And our classes! Our Core Competency teleclasses are amazing opportunities for new coaches or those desiring to brush up on their skills to spend an hour once a month more deeply experiencing the meaning and coaching of the ICF core competencies. The calls are held the second Tuesday of the month from 1-2PM. Kathy Munoz, Jan Martinez, Mary Selzer and Kyle Kinder bring deep knowledge and coaching experience to these calls.

And finally, the monthly teleclass series. We work hard to identify and to connect our members and guests from other states and countries with outstanding speakers who provide timely, powerful information to grow our practices and our skills.

There is a quote by Brene' Brown that comes to mind when I think of what we as a chapter strive to create for our members:

"I define connection as the energy that exists between people when they feel seen, heard, and valued; when they can give and receive without judgment; and when they derive sustenance and strength from the relationship."

Indeed it is connection with our fellow coaches that provides all those things Brene speaks of. From our Café's, to our telecalls and teleclasses across the state of Michigan, Monday-Friday, 7-8 times a month there is the opportunity to reach out across the miles or to sit with our fellow coaches and JUST BE. Are you connecting? We want to meet you!  Come join us, and experience friendship, support, energy and collaboration. We are ICF Michigan!

CHANGES REGARDING MEMBERSHIP

NEW ICF MICHIGAN MEMBERSHIP CLASSIFICATIONS AND BENEFITS ANNOUNCED

On December 19, 2014, ICF Michigan members received an e-mail from our ICF Michigan chapter leadership announcing our new membership classifications to be offered starting with your membership renewal in June, 2015. As a Charter chapter of the ICF, by the end of 2015 ICF will be requiring all full (voting) members of an ICF chapter to also belong to the ICF. As a charter chapter of the ICF, ICF Michigan will now offer two classifications of membership: ICF Michigan Member and Community Associate. Guests may participate at full fee in our events.

ICF Michigan Member

Participation as an ICF Michigan Member requires being a member in good standing with ICF Global. The benefits of ICF Michigan and our $60 annual dues remain unchanged. ICF Global's membership is $245 per year.

Community Associate

Participation as a Community Associate does NOT require ICF Global membership. Community Associates will continue to enjoy many of the benefits available to ICF Michigan members and be eligible to participate in local events at a discounted rate. The cost of a Community Associate membership is $120 per year.

A graphic of the new participation options is inserted below.

What do you do next?

If you already ARE an active ICF Global member

When your ICF Michigan Chapter membership comes up for renewal in June 2015, simply renew your ICF Michigan Chapter membership and continue enjoying the many benefits and resources as you have in the past. Nothing will change for you.

If you are NOT an active ICF Global member

When your ICF Michigan Chapter membership comes up for renewal in June 2015, you will also need to join ICF Global to be eligible to remain an ICF Michigan member. There are many benefits to being a member of ICF Global and many resources for coaches to be found on the ICF Global website. If you choose not to join ICF Global, you will still have the option to participate in our Chapter as a Community Associate with limited benefits.

As we launch into the transition, we will be sharing more information via email, at Coach Café's, and on the website. We will a reminder of this change and renewal instructions prior to the annual ICF Michigan renewal date in June 2015.
